Beryl to Launch E-Scooter Hire in Plymouth
Plymouth is set to expand its eco-friendly transport options with the launch of a new e-scooter hire trial. Scheduled to go live on July 28, 2026, the initiative will integrate 200 electric scooters into the city’s existing “Connect Plymouth” sustainable transport network.
The trial—backed by the Department for Transport (DfT) and entirely funded by the micro-mobility operator Beryl—will see vehicles rolled out in stages. An initial fleet of 50 e-scooters will hit the streets in the first week, followed by an additional 150 vehicles over the course of August.
Seamless Integration and Strict Safety Controls
The new e-scooters will be co-located with Beryl’s pre-existing e-bike fleet across the city’s 68 operational docking bays. This allows commuters and tourists to easily pick up or drop off vehicles at major transit hubs, including the local railway stations, the coach station, the Torpoint Ferry, and the Barbican landing stage.
Unlike privately owned e-scooters, which remain illegal on UK public roads, the rental fleet operates under strict regulatory oversight. To unlock a vehicle via the Beryl app, users must fulfill specific legal criteria:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Hold a valid full or provisional driving licence.
- Complete a mandatory in-app safety tutorial covering riding rules and parking etiquette before their first trip.
Smart Engineering and the City Centre “Go Slow” Zone
The vehicles feature built-in safety technology tailored for urban environments. This includes GPS-enabled geofencing, always-on front and rear visibility lights, and robust electromagnetic braking systems engineered to handle wet coastal conditions and Plymouth’s steep hills.
While the e-scooters have a capped top speed of 15.5 mph for use on roads and designated cycle lanes, they are strictly banned from pavements. Furthermore, planners have established an automated 3 mph “go slow” zone on and around the newly revamped Armada Way. The moment an e-scooter crosses into this high-pedestrian civic square, its onboard software automatically throttles the motor to ensure pedestrian safety.
Civic Impact and Sustainability Goals
The two-year trial, running until March 2028, builds on the strong foundations laid by Beryl’s e-bikes since 2023. Over the last three years, more than 35,000 riders have logged nearly 298,000 bike journeys in Plymouth, successfully replacing an estimated 74,000 carbon-emitting car trips.
Welcoming the expansion, Councillor John Stephens, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, stated:
“We’re really keen to explore greener, healthier ways for people to get around the city… The more travel options we can offer, the better. I hope people will give them a go and see them as an easy, convenient way to either make their essential everyday journeys or just explore the city.”
By providing an accessible alternative for short, single-occupancy car journeys, the e-scooters aim to further alleviate traffic congestion, drive down local carbon emissions, and push Plymouth closer to its net-zero environmental targets.
